  2. Well about time! Absolutely correct.

    The music of the refrain was based on Berlin’s 1917 song “Smile and Show your Dimple”. It was introduced in the 1933 Broadway review “As Thousands Cheer” by Marilyn Miller and Clifton Webb. Later used in the films “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” (1938), “Holiday Inn” (1942) and “Easter Parade” (1948) (From the Irving Berlin Anthology, Hal Leonard Corp, 1994).

    The biography of Al Jolson is quite extraordinary and is linked here.

    I have no doubt that this genre will outlast all our contemporary pop ‘music’.
